[edit] The Ottawa Hypothesis

The Ottawa Hypothesis refers to a theory put forth to explain the lack of Canadian contestants in the GOF. (To date, Mike Joghs is the only native Canadian to win the Fight.) Simply put, the theory is this: there is a systematic recruiting agency, based in the nation's capital, that recruits powerful fighters for an unknown purpose. The hypothesis is backed up by numerous sightings of moderately successful fighters in and around Ottawa.

[edit] Possible Explanations

There has been considerable debate on the likelihood of a system like the Ottawa Hypothesis existing and being kept secret. Many of the arguments involve the reasons the government - or a separate agency - would do it. Here are a few examples of the speculation surrounding the Hypothesis.

Military 'Black Ops' Squad As capital of Canada, Ottawa is a hub of military personnel and offices. Following the recent declassification of the JTF II counter-terrorist unit, the idea of a secret collection of the best Canadian fighters for service in the military does not seem so farfetched. A team skilled in the brutal hand-to-hand fighting typified by the Fight would be useful in many undercover missions.

Great Canadian Outdoor Fight Though generally disbelieved by serious fight scholars, the theory that a GOF limited entirely to Canadian fighters exists is advanced frequently enough to be mentioned here. Besides the obvious logistical problems involved in keeping a 3000 man fight secret, no Canadian applicants to the GOF have ever mentioned a competing event. Proponents of the CGOF theory point to this as evidence that the few Canadians in the normal Fight have simply not heard of the Canadian Fight, because of its secrecy. Opponents argue, "How could anyone know, if it's such a secret".

Super-soldier Testing Slightly less far-fetched than the Secret Fight theory is the Super-soldier theory. This theory speculates that scientific research is being done at the Experimental Farm in Ottawa to determine what makes the more incredible feats of the GOF possible.

Surrency's Theory Young Jude Surrency had his own idea about the Ottawa Hypothesis: he suggested that Canadians are "... a bunch of pussy sonafabitches." While ignored by Canadian researchers, this theory has found a great deal of support in parts of the southern United States.
