Marcus Brown
From The Great Outdoor Fight
Marcus Brown was the first black man to compete in the 1859 Great Outdoor Fight, entering at the behest of wealthy Arkansan slave owner Robert Talbot. While strong and a ferocious fighter, racial tensions were at a high point with the Civil War just around the corner. Brown was left largely alone, and also was fairly ignorant of how the Fight worked, and so joined in the initial scrum. He did not survive beyond that, being the 134th man to fall. He returned to Arkansas where he worked for Talbot until he was freed in 1866, after which records of him cannot be found.
