Great Outdoor Fight 1977

The wholly unexpected victory of Herb Lane, the Donut Duke of Delaware, caused much consternation in 1977. Widely perceived among Fight aficionados as being unfit and unworthy of his Championship, "The Fat Man Who Can" was considered for many years to be the instigator of the 80s Slump. However, following Lane's untimely death in 1992 and the beginning of the 90s Revival the next year, many Fight Studies historians have revised their opinion of Lane. No one man, the current theories suggest, was responsible for the 80s Slump, rather it was a combination of factors that have only become apparent in retrospect. Many now place the true beginning of the 80s Slump in 1979, rather than 1977.
