Great Outdoor Fight 1958
From The Great Outdoor Fight
The bribery scandal of the 1958 Great Outdoor Fight is widely considered a blemish on the history of the contest, and inspired a number of important reforms, not the least of which was the introduction in 1962 of the Jeeps.

[edit] Trivia
Famed science fiction author Harlan Jay Ellison was a participant in the 1958 Fight. Having come into contact with Matta's tactics during the Fight, Ellison immediately denounced the fighters and the Fight in obscene terms, scaled the fence, and walked off fuming into the sunset. Ellison would never enter the Fight again. Fight historian Richard Suliman has speculated that Ellison might have been a favorite for Champion, had he been involved in a cleaner Fight.
