Great Outdoor Fight 1947
From The Great Outdoor Fight
The 1947 Fight is memorable primarily for the torrential downpour that lasted for the entire three days. The rain turned the grounds of The Acres into a treacherous mud puddle, and severely reduced visibility for the entire Fight. Three fatalities and thirty-six injuries were reported to be due to slip-and-fall accidents on the muddy ground. The difficulty in walking or running, combined with the reduced visibility, made this one of the least violent Fights on record. This year proved the worth of the improvements that had been made to the Acres since 1880, when similar conditions led to disastrous flooding.
