After the first fight in 1851 won by Isidro Jackson, Thomas McFiggans, the auditor of the first event and part of the Ruling Body, declared that Isidro Jackson had won the event due to the injestion of large quantities of Rye whiskey and three bottles of high grade costive. In addition, Isidro's infatuation with his close friend Jorge Gonzalez disgusted much of the country. Authorities were of the opinion that if a "man of certain unholy intentions" was allowed to be the reigning champion, that future fights would have to be held in Kansas City.

Thomas McFiggans declared that a second round be fought with the second place finisher Seth Perlman a Jewish refugee from the 1843 "Yellow Rush". Despite the fact that Perlman had lost one of his lungs in the first fight, he was able to make a miraculous recovery. This second fight lasted 16 hours even though the two were the only contestants. Perlman learned his lesson in the first fight and spent the days after his recovery repeatedly hitting himself in the back of the neck with a horseshoe to strengthen his neck muscles, a defense against Isidro's kick to the neck manuver. Perlman took a smack and run approach to this second fight which infuriated Isidro. Hours later, exhausted, Isidro tried to find a quiet place to releive himself Perlman snuck up and defeated Isidro with a well placed donkey punch, shattering one of his ribs and puncturing both kidneys.
