Enrico Caruso
From The Great Outdoor Fight
Riding on the wave of the remarkable success of his wildly popular gramophone recording of "Vesti la giubba" from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, famous opera great, tenor Enrico Caruso, was invited to provide the entertainment for the 1902 fight.
GOF lore tells us that the millionth copy of the recording (making Caruso the first artist in history to sell a million copies of one gramophone recording) was actually sold at the Great Outdoor Fight in 1902. The gramophone recording was made available for purchase at the Delightful and Tasty Wholesome Refreshments Tent.
Caruso furthermore holds an important place in Great Outdoor Fight history as he famously portrayed the rise and subsequent fall of 1890 champion Giuseppe Barnes in the 1906 GOF-based opera, La Lotta Grande.
