Edwin Rose

From The Great Outdoor Fight

Jump to: navigation, search

1856 Champion. Edwin Rose, an incredibly large man (5'11", 422 lbs) with a surprising agility, was single-handedly responsible for the destruction of 50% of Ken Crandall's crop in 1856, due to having eaten it. He never attacked another fighter with food, but did put Reginald Montalban in a permanent coma for throwing a head of lettuce at him, though he later claimed this was due to him breaking the rules of the fight as opposed to disrespecting the food. He then ate the lettuce, which he had saved.

Edwin's fighting style was one of the more eccentric ones seen in the Fight. Today, it is classified as a variation of sumo, but as sumo fighting was unheard of in the US in 1856 it is unknown whether Edwin somehow stumbled upon it, or had innovated it separately from Japan.

A fictionalized version of Edwin Rose appeared in an episode of Gunsmoke. In the course of this episode, Rose's culinary habits were used as comic relief. Rose, however, was depicted as a fierce fighter who ultimately eliminated both Festus and Marshall Dillon, who were both fighting that year. The time periods don't map well enough to call this a depiction of the 1856 Fight, however.
