Dade Waters
From The Great Outdoor Fight
An actor best known for portraying Dylan Berkheimer on the Original Star Trek episode "The Great Out-Temporal Fight." This was a fictionalized portrayal of the 1931 Great Outdoor Fight.
The episode in question was sharply criticized by Fight aficionados. In particular, Waters -- who was tall, handsome and in shape, which is why he was cast -- seemed 'too stiff' to be a Champion, in the eyes of his detractors. He "didn't carry himself with authority."
After several years -- and a dry spell in acting roles -- Waters decided to enter the 1971 Great Outdoor Fight, on the 40th anniversary of Berkheimer's victory. He qualified and entered, and did passably well. He also met Dwight Berkheimer, the son of Dylan Berkheimer and a long time participant in the Fight himself. Berkheimer -- who enjoyed the Star Trek episode more than some -- was pleased to meet Waters and gave him and his portrayal of his father his blessing.
Waters continued to play character parts -- particularly westerns -- until the early 80's. Today he is a real estate developer in Modesto, California. He also attends Star Trek and Great Outdoor Fight conventions and makes personal appearances.
