Boris Kowalewski
From The Great Outdoor Fight
Boris Kowalewski (1869-1907) was a Polish immigrant and ex-convict most notable for the brutal way in which he beat Eliza Waddle to death in the 1907 Great Outdoor Fight.
Kowalewski was not particularly balanced and was suspected of murder to begin with. He was also known to be a misogynist, and believed (rather irrationally) that women were to blame for all the problems of his life and, indeed, all the sin of the world. A large, burly man who got strong as a sailor and dockworker -- not to mention doing hard labor in prison -- Kowalewski far outmatched the petite Waddle, and once cornering her on the Acres proceeded to beat her to death.
While there are no rules prohibiting excessive force in the Fight, it can be a fine line between establishing oneself as a truly vicious leader and clearly unnecessary brutality. Several witnesses -- including 1906 Champion Carey Morgan -- were outraged at Kowalewski's excessiveness. They turned on Kowalewski and ended his life as abruptly as Kowalewski had ended Waddle's.
