Blood Mercenaries
From The Great Outdoor Fight
The Blood Mercenaries were an army put together in 1959 by Wilford Geldum and Johnny "Snakeskin" Lakesbin, using some of the hundreds of thousands of dollars given to the pair by Chris Matta to lay down for him in 1958. Geldum and Lakesbin offered two hundred men ten dollars apiece cash on the barrelhead (roughly $65 in 2004 currency) to join up and bonuses of up to $500 depending on how long they lasted in the Fight afterward. The Blood Mercenaries were assured that so long as they served loyally until there was no one but Blood Mercenaries left, they would be released and able to fight for the top prize at the end of the Fight, taking home extra money in the process. Geldum and Lakesbin felt that unlike Matta's outright bribery to take a fall, this was a legitimate means of putting together a loyal army to fight for them.
Tower One disagreed, and discussed unleashing the brand new Jeeps against the army, but when Jeremiah Merryman began assembling an all-volunteer force called the Black Watch to oppose them, they decided to see if the Fight could correct itself (and rehabilitate its badly damaged reputation in the process).
Despite outnumbering the Black Watch, the Blood Mercenaries were defeated, with over 120 fatalities, including both Geldum and Lakesbin.
