Barney Patterson
From The Great Outdoor Fight
Though his victory may have been somewhat lackluster, having limped -- literally, on a broken tibia -- through the entire third day, Patterson held vociferously his claim to the title of "First Champion of the New Century" throughout his life. Twice during the five years after his victory, he came to blows with the 1900 champion, Bernard Gleper. The two were never quite able to settle this dispute, as no one else truly was concerned.
