"Gimps" McBane

From The Great Outdoor Fight

Jump to: navigation, search

Twenty-Three Skidoo Howard "Gimps" McBane (b. 1908, d. 1997 Norfolk, Virginia) acquired that nickname after the 1931 fight when Orchid Mooch temporarily wielded him as a club in an attempt to bludgeon "Iron" Jack McFee in the head during one of his infamous rages. McBane took the bulk of the damage of the attack as Jack once again lived up to his nickname by shrugging off the onslaught and eliminating Mooch with a right to the jaw.

Despite a broken body, "Gimps" defied predictions that he was permanently incapacitated and managed to return to the fight next year, though his left arm was never the same again.

McBane was often seen sitting next to Orchid Mooch later in life, drinking whiskey and lye. McBane died in 1997.

"Surrie... I don't really know why he took to me the way he did. Somethin' 'bout my arm I guess, mighta made him think we was two of a kind or somethin'. Can't say. He was good people." - "Gimps McBane; Forever "Young": A Loving Tribute To Jude Surrency, 1995.
